Heading into Wildfire Season: What Can We Expect in the Pacific Northwest?

PORTLAND, Ore. — Experts in Oregon say despite recent record rainfall in Portland, it only takes one dry day for a fire to happen.

A recent Portland State University study found the devastating 2020 Labor Day wildfires burned more than 800,000 acres combined.

Researchers say it’s an example of how wildfires can occur in forests that are usually wet.

“It caught a lot of people by surprise. Obviously, it had huge impacts, destroyed several communities, killed several individuals,” said Cody Evers, a research associate with the Department of Environmental Science and Management at PSU.
