Communications Update – Getting Connected Upriver

Lack of access to phone and Internet services has been a major problem for people working on fire relief efforts, and a huge issue for residents looking to return to their homes.

As the McKenzie Highway opens up again as of noon today, there is another major bit of positive news: Blue Sky Market is now pumping gas again, and you can pay with either cash or card!

There is also good news on the connectivity front. There is a free Wi-fi hot spot available at the Upper McKenzie Community Center relief station, and that is currently working very well.

Frank Zachar from FEMA today told residents at the daily taskforce briefing in Rainbow that although the temporary cell tower outside Takoda’s is going to be removed today, they are liaising with county authorities on handing over some equipment and working out the best way to offer longer-term solutions to keep everyone connected.

Leading those efforts is Lane County Emergency Manager Patence Winningham-Melcher, who will be primarily focusing on securing Internet access for the Orchid Health mobile clinic and fire station, as well as for the school so students can engage in remote learning activities. On this page you can see a map of the current towers and hot spots available in the area, and we will keep updating you regularly as more are added and this infrastructure develops in the coming days and weeks.
